Earth Day in Melbourne

Every year on 22 April, Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder that the future of our planet is shaped by the choices made today.
At Novotel Melbourne Central and ibis Melbourne Central, travel is designed to feel good, not only for guests, but for the world around them.
This Earth Day, the hotels are proud to highlight how thoughtful stays in the heart of Melbourne can contribute to meaningful, lasting change.
A More Conscious Way to Stay
Sustainability in hospitality is not defined by grand gestures, but by consistent, intentional action. Behind every comfortable stay is a series of decisions aimed at reducing environmental impact while enhancing the overall guest experience. From minimising waste to conserving water and energy, the approach is simple: do better, every day.
Turning Everyday Actions Into Impact
Skip the Clean, Earn Rewards
Through the Skip the Clean Program, guests are invited to opt out of daily housekeeping, helping to reduce water and energy consumption. In return, guests receive 100 ALL – Accor Live Limitless points for each day skippe, a small incentive that contributes to a larger environmental impact.
Giving Food Waste a Second Life
All food waste generated across the hotels’ kitchens and outlets is diverted from landfill through a partnership with Go Zero Waste. Instead, it is repurposed into compost, fertiliser, and pet food.
In 2025 alone, this initiative has:
Diverted 3,923 kg of waste from landfill
Avoided 7,454 kg of CO₂ emissions
Delivered an environmental impact equivalent to removing 701 cars from the road for a day
Smarter Water Use, Every Day
At Novotel & ibis Melbourne Central, water is recognised as a true lifeline.
Over the past 12 months, the hotel has implemented sustainability-focused initiatives to reduce water consumption, including the completion of a full NABERS audit to identify further efficiency opportunities.
The hotel has focused on high-usage areas to implement smarter, more sustainable systems that deliver real impact. By expanding the capacity of rooftop rainwater capture and diverting it into tanks that supply all public area toilets, the team has reduced domestic water use by an average of 1,200 litres per day. With infrastructure in place to measure water consumption across all areas of the building, further integration into guest room facilities is now being explored, reinforcing the hotel’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in water conservation.

Saying Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic
Across guest rooms and dining outlets, Purezza filtered water systems have been introduced, replacing single-use plastic bottles with sustainable glass alternatives.
A dedicated guest water station further supports this initiative, offering a convenient way to stay hydrated while reducing plastic waste.
Supporting Our Local Community
Sustainability efforts extend beyond hotel operations. Plastic bottles collected from guest rooms are sorted and donated to support Scouts Victoria, contributing to local environmental and community initiatives.
A Culture of Sustainability
Sustainability at the hotels is embedded not only in operations, but in people and culture.
Team members are encouraged to adopt more sustainable commuting habits, including walking, carpooling, and using public transport. The hotels also actively support volunteering and engagement with local community programs.
A dedicated Green Team meets regularly to explore new initiatives, identify sustainable suppliers, and drive continuous improvement across all areas of the business.
Our Commitment to a Greener Future
We’ve set clear goals to guide our journey forward, ensuring that sustainability becomes part of our everyday operations without compromising the guest experience.
Our commitments include:
- Reducing food waste and landfill contribution
- Eliminating single-use plastics
- Supporting local and seasonal produce
- Increasing sustainable protein options
- Reducing overall energy consumption
- Partnering with local charities and community organisations
